New Donation Center!

Due to an increasing number of interested donors and limited storage space in our shelters, as well as a need for tighter confidentiality/security of our locations, we are launching a stand-alone Donation’s Drop-Off Center.


96 Afton Parkway in Portsmouth on the corner of Afton & Irwin.


The Center will be open for donations at any time on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 AM - 7 PM, no appointments necessary. Please see the calendar to the right for December 2017's Center dates.


Clients at the HER Shelter will continue to have access to all donations, using them to furnish new homes, as well as to enrich their stay at the Shelter.

2) Due to the generosity of people like you, we are able to offer even more services and assistance to our clients. In the world of nonprofits, there are grants that we receive that we must match or get reimbursed for - and in those cases personal donations like this are essential to continuing the flow of our services. You are literally making things happen for those in need! If you would like your donation to be specifically donated to a program or cause, please contact our office and let the administrator know.

Needs List: 

Below are lists of our on-going and time-specific needs. If there is no date listed by the item or list of items, then we likely experience a constant demand for it/them. If you have more questions about what we are currently accepting as donations, please feel free to give our main office a call or to contact Wynn (reached by email - Wynn@hershelter.com).

  • Shelter needs (while clients stay)

    As of 11/28/17: 

    • First Aid items (band-aids, ointment, hydrogen peroxide, wipes, etc.)
    • Bedding (twin-size sheets, pillows, pillowcases, bedspreads, etc.) 
    • Nonperishable Foods
    • Paper Products**** (toilet paper, paper towels)
    • Powder Laundry Detergent & Regular
    • Home Cleaning Products (wipes, brooms, etc)
  • Aftercare needs (after clients leave)

    As of 11/28/17:

    • Nonperishable Foods and Cleaning Supplies
    • Bus Passes!!
    • Gift Cards (grocery stores, gas, Wal-Mart, pharmacy stores, etc.)
    • Bedding & Pillows (assorted sizes)
    • Towels (personal and kitchen)
    • Home Decor & Furniture (Please note: Furniture MUST be dropped off)
    • Pots & Pans
    • Kitchen Wares (plates, bowls, utensils, cups, mugs)
    • Certain items of furniture (please call 757-485-1073 and ask for Antonette)
  • Special Requests

    Sometimes requests are specific to the needs of clients! As of 11/28/17:

    • Reusable Lunch Boxes/Bags
    • Plungers, brooms, mop-heads!
    • Laundry Baskets
    • Women's Bra's & Underwear (all sizes)
    • Coats, boots, hats, scarves, mittens, etc - cold weather is coming!
