Silent Nights is our year end campaign to raise much needed funds to provide crisis services to families fleeing violent situations.

Help!  We Are In Need of Cleaning Supplies

Help!  We are in need of cleaning supplies.  In order to meet pressing needs of the shelter as well as some budget cuts, we have had to realign some budget items and cleaning supplies are one of the items hit.   There are a couple of ways you can help.

We Are on the Front Line, Please Help!

In 2021-22 , we served 468 clients.   We assisted clients with emergency shelter, locating housing in the community, employment readiness , counseling and legal advocacy. Please consider making a donation.  Even a small donation combined with other small donations really adds up!  Women and children who are fleeing domestic violence in our community rely solely on the HER Shelter.    While much of our programming is supported through a variety of grants, many innovative projects and niceties of life are not.  We work tirelessly to provide safety, advocacy, leadership, sustainability, and support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, human trafficking, stalking and homelessness.  Thanks to the support of our community we are able to provide the best possible services to the women and children who are in our shelter.  The H.E.R. Shelter is a registered non-profit organization so your contribution is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Domestic Violence - What can you do to help break the cycle?

Domestic violence impacts millions of people each year.  It impacts men, women, and children.  It affects those of all sexual orientations, all races and all socio-economic statuses.  It CAN be prevented.  It requires the collective voice and power of all individuals, families and institutions.  Each of whom adds a valuable and powerful component to transforming our communities because EVERYONE deserves a safe place to live!

What can you do?

  • Talk to loved ones about violence and oppression
  • Create a culture of consent in your home.
  • Speak out when you notice micro agressions
  • Use social media to raise awareness amongst your peers.
  • Host a "Lunch and Learn" at your office or an informational meeting at your church or organization.  Ask for the HER Shelter to come out and speak.
  • Tell someone they matter
  • Hold loved ones accountable if they tell a racist/sexist joke
  • Volunteer at the HER Shelter
  • Participate in an event hosted by the HER Shelter
  • SHARE, SHARE, SHARE HER Shelter contact info if you are concerned about someone.


Collective actions by single people are critical to the story of our movement.  While each may be unique and personal, when woven together they create a strong foundation for the world we imagine.  When we put our thoughts into action, they become concrete steps on the pathway to social change.  Building that pathway is an investment we make TOGETHER!

The H.E.R. Shelter is a private, non-profit agency, certified by the United Way of South Hampton Roads. We participate in a 24-hour emergency hotline where a trained advocate can assist individuals in need of information, referrals, or - when appropriate - can provide safe, emergency housing for a woman and her children. The H.E.R Shelter currently operates three shelter facilities in the cities of Portsmouth and Chesapeake, Virginia.
