Back 2 School Bash

We are currently collecting back to school supplies for the youth that live in shelter or those who are in our community program.  While most will be experiencing virtual school, we want to start them off right with new supplies so they can put their best foot forward during this difficult back to school season.  For more details about our back to school bash, click HERE.

We Are on the Front Line, Please Help!

The HER Shelter needs your help!  We are in unprecedented times.  The Coronavirus has changed how we must serve our clients and how quickly our clients can find sustainable employment and housing.  We are having most meetings with clients via phone.  We have worked with our clients to understand proper cleaning and sanitizing their living space.  We are expecting our clients to stay in shelter longer because it will be harder to find a job and affordable housing.  We are anticipating we made need to place some clients in hotels and that is VERY EXPENSIVE.  Regardless of how we serve our clients, the cold reality is that domestic violence does not decrease but increases during times like this.

The stress from the uncertainty of loss of income, food scarcity, and illness leads to incidents of domestic violence especially for families who are living in tumultuous situations.  Abusers have more access to their victims because everyone is home together.  We are currently not able to accept donations that offset some of our expenses.  Add all of that to the fact that we had to cancel our largest fundraiser, the 2020 Gala, we, the HER Shelter is in of help.  We NEED your help!  Please consider making a donation.  Even a small donation combined with other small donations really adds up!  Women and children who are fleeing domestic violence in our community rely solely on the HER Shelter.  We want to ensure we have resources during this difficult time.  If you are able to help, please click the "Make A Donation" button and give as you are able.  Thank you for making a difference!  Together, we can save lives everyday.

Corona Virus Update

The H.E.R Shelter is considered an essential service to our community.  As such, we remain open.  While we are open, we have adjusted how we deliver services during this time of social distancing.

  • Our hotline is functioning 24/7 to help those experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking
  • The beds in our shelter will be reserved for those in imminent danger.
  • We will meet with in shelter clients as well as community clients via phone meetings as much as possible.
  • Transportation services will be modified for non-essential travel.
  • Our children's team will be developing packages of activities for children who are not currently in school.

If you are in need of assistance with finding childcare:

Childcare Away toll-free Parent Referral line- 1-866-KIDS-TLC or email and one of their Referral specialists will assist parents in locating alternative child care options

If you are in need of other non-medical services during the pandemic, the United Way of South Hampton Roads has set up a Coronavirus Hotline at 757-858-7777.  Additional resources can also be found at

The H.E.R. Shelter is a private, non-profit agency, certified by the United Way of South Hampton Roads, and the statewide coalition: Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance (VSDVAA). We participate in the Coordinated Crisis Response, a 24-hour emergency hotline where a trained advocate can assist individuals in need of information, referrals, or - when appropriate - can provide safe, emergency housing for a woman and her children. The H.E.R Shelter currently operates three shelter facilities in the cities of Portsmouth and Chesapeake, Virginia.
